Settlers of Catan
Catan is a landmark modern board game that introduced millions of players to the eurogame style. Players take on the role of settlers attempting to develop an island by collecting and trading resources such as wood, brick, sheep, wheat, and ore. The modular board changes every game, which ensures that no two sessions play out the same way and forces players to adapt their strategy based on geography and resource distribution.
A major feature of the game is its trading system, where negotiation between players is not only encouraged but essential. Because resource production is determined by dice rolls, players must balance probability with positioning and diplomacy. Expansion of roads and settlements creates competition for space, making timing and placement critical strategic decisions throughout the game.
Despite its simplicity, Catan offers meaningful strategic depth through its combination of resource management, negotiation, and probabilistic planning. It is widely considered the “gateway game” that introduced modern board gaming to a mainstream audience.
Designed by Klaus Teuber, Catan became a global phenomenon and is credited with helping establish the modern board game industry. It has sold tens of millions of copies worldwide and remains one of the most influential tabletop games ever created.
