Scythe is an alternate-history strategy game set in a stylised 1920s Eastern Europe following a great war. Players control asymmetric factions, each with unique abilities, starting positions, and hidden objectives. The game combines engine-building, resource management, and area control in a highly strategic framework.

Rather than focusing purely on combat, Scythe rewards efficiency and planning. Players must balance expansion, production, and upgrading their faction’s capabilities. Mechs play a central thematic and mechanical role, allowing players to traverse the map, control territory, and project power in different ways.

Combat exists but is intentionally streamlined, often resolved quickly and decisively, placing more emphasis on positioning and deterrence than constant warfare. This creates a tense, chess-like experience where players must carefully consider their moves and anticipate opponents.

Designed by Jamey Stegmaier with artwork by Jakub Rozalski, Scythe is renowned for its immersive world-building and striking visual style. It is one of the most acclaimed modern strategy games and remains highly influential in the asymmetric design space.
