Carcassonne is a tile-laying game where players collectively build a medieval landscape by placing tiles that form cities, roads, monasteries, and farmland. Players then deploy followers (meeples) to claim these features and score points when they are completed.

The gameplay is simple to learn but offers significant tactical depth. Every tile placement affects the evolving map, and players must balance expansion, blocking opponents, and optimising scoring opportunities. Timing when to commit meeples is critical, as they are a limited resource.

A key strength of Carcassonne is its accessibility combined with emergent strategy. Even new players can quickly understand the rules, but experienced players can develop sophisticated placement and scoring strategies.

Designed by Klaus-Jürgen Wrede and published by Hans im Glück, Carcassonne is one of the most iconic modern board games and has inspired countless expansions and spin-offs.
